GRAFFITI CLOTHING

GRAFFITI THE ART OF GETTING UP
Graffiti is a phenomenon that has been around since man started painting on cave walls but today many and the authorities would call it criminal, now this is not a discussion for us here so we'll just focus on the positive aspects of graffiti and the side line of graffiti design and clothing or has the canvas has been called t-shirts.

My first experience of graffiti was during the punk era and the concept of getting your name or crew known and that you may have been in to areas that where outside your territory, in graffiti terms this is know as "getting up" or "getting your name up and out there". Now the Midlands UK is not quite New York and the gang situation was nothing like there so the tagging was really just a sign we had been there and nothing more than vandalism. Today if there's one form of graffiti that I'm not into it's tagging, probably because it's the most abused, as any fool can scrawl tag on a wall so it's not what I would a call art. It was hip hip hop that embraced graffiti and made it it's own the movement and it's as big today as it ever was. Having said all that, through time, "getting up" and "kinging it", there are some tags that have been there for years. "Seen" for one, there is a definite art in some of these hand styles, add to that to the fact that many graffiti writers do tag or sign their walls, such as Nylon and UARM. Anyway time to stop rambling and move on to some of the graffiti clothing on Sturban Clothing.

OBEY
Obey is a graffiti artist who specialises in stencil and stickers. Obey has become something of a phenomenon in that "Andre has a posse" and that posse is headed by Obey aka Shepard Fairey who started stencilling images of the pro wrestler Andre The Giant on walls world wide. Obey captured the imagination of the generation and via the internet distributed stencils and downloadable Obey stickers to make Obey known world wide. Obey moved from stencil and stickers to posters and it was a small step to t-shirts and now a full blown men's clothing range under the banner of Obey. Whilst today Obey still produces posters, many limited edition, and signed selling to speculators, the majority of his time is tied up doing commission for various companies. Obey designed the cover for Elephunk the Black Eyed Peas album and in 2006 the release of the Marc Echo computer game features graffiti artwork by Obey.

NYLON

Nylon is from the old school of graffiti and whilst he's out bombing in and around Brighton he still finds time to produce design for a number of clothing companies as well as his own aptly name Nylon. Nylon started his graffiti adventure producing stencils and much of his old work was stencil based and as he gained a high reputation, his work was published in a number of graffiti books and publications. Much of Nylon's time is now divided between traditional graffiti and design work.

ABUZE
Abuze is an interesting one, they have taken ideas from graffiti and moved them on a little but you can still see that the t-shirts, hoods and caps they produce are most definitely graffiti based. So what are they doing that's interesting? All over prints and custom made hoods and crew to start, add to that the fact hat they take London underground maps and travelcards, cut them up, laminate them and them sew them on to t-shirts makes a unique and the t-shirts look amazing, unfortunately all sold now.
