Retreat Clothing - Interview with Paul Sid
Talk to us a little bit about Retreats history and how it got started? I started Retreat in 2005. It was basically due to myself being bored with the designs established brands were releasing and I thought I could compete with some of them. I started off releasing small numbers and selling to my friends.
What are the mission statement and the philosophy behind the brand? Retreat is a fresh, innovative and ethical independent clothing brand. Our main focus is to create solid designs that cater for all markets, and not just the manufactured ones which have been aligned to a specific scene. Applying mainly discharged and waterbased inks, we aim to produce garments to the highest quality. The designs express personal feelings and occasionally question international conflict.
Where do you get your inspiration? We draw inspiration from 80?s sitcoms, graffiti, graphic design, photography and of course, music. Influenced by all of creation and everyday life
In what ways does Retreat differ from other brands? Being an independent brand I have 100% control of what gets released ? from overseeing the actual print process to the labels being sewed in and packing of the garments. Retreat?s main point of differentiation to other brands is our attention to detail. Basically I would never release something I wouldn?t be prepared to wear with pride myself. We focus on producing only the highest quality of prints. Mainly executing designs using both waterbased and discharge inks which penetrate the shirts fibers for that ultra soft feeling print. I personally detest those major brands who choose to release a oversized print in plastisol ink. Who wants to walk about with a big piece of rubber attached to them?
Who is your typical customer? Typical customers range from my close mates to I guess streetwear fans and hopefully people who appreciate art.
What is your current best selling item? Thats a hard call as most of our designs are released in small runs. Usually 20-30 prints each garment, and we very rarely re-print. I would say the best selling tees to date would be:
Vida Buena Tee (oversized print of latin model Vida Guerra) Heavenly Glory tee (oversized print featuring legendary Bruce Lee) Retreat X Vaughn Bode tee
Where is retreat currently being sold? Currently Retreat is only being sold via our online store and a couple of stores in the UK. A few years back we did have accounts worldwide but due to the Global Economic climate we pulled out of alot as it wasn?t worth the hassle. To be honest, at this current time I?m not to bothered about stores stocking us. When we initially came out we were classed as a street wear brand and compared to certain brands which I wasn?t too happy about.
What are some of your favourite brands out right now? Brands I like include Nike, North Face, PAM, Answer, Suburban Bliss, Trilogy Tapes, Tonite
What new upcoming, projects, or releases are you currently working on? I?m currently working on getting a design released in collaboration with Photographer Stuart Mitchell which hopefully will drop in a month or so. Hopefully to get a few designs done for local Hartlepool Dance crew Ruff Diamonds and to just continue to release limited good quality prints on equally good constructed tees and sweatshirts
What do you hope for in 2010? A better full time job, to be settled in my new house with my family, and hope my son Jonah has a wicked 1st birthday!! |
